Tiger
Malayan tiger (P. t. jacksoni)
According to the revised taxonomy of the Felidae, the tiger subspecies Panthera tigris jacksoni is included into the subspecies Panthera tigris tigris.
The former subspecies Malayan tiger was classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List. It occurs only on the Peninsular Malaysia. It was only in 2004 recognised as a subspecies of Panthera tigris, based on genetic analysis. However, there are no clear morphological differences between the tigers from Malaysia and other parts of Indochina. Thus, its recognition was provisional. In 2010, the population in the Malayan Peninsula was estimated to number 493-1480 adult individuals. The Malayan tiger occurs in three large subpopulations with none having more than 250 individuals. It is most seriously threatened by poaching and habitat fragmentation due to development projects and agriculture.
