2015  Full Book

The Wild Jaguar Private Refuge of El Baul in Cojedes State, Venezuela, has as a main objective to solve the problem of livestock predation by jaguars (_Panthera onca_) on the Western Llano cattle ranches in Venezuela. To make this possible we interviewed cattle ranchers to motivate them with this project. All the cattle ranchers we chooses to take part in this project were selected by their previously known their interest about conservation issues. On those interviews we explained them the objectives and advantages of the project. We also carried out field work to describe the principal habitat for this species. Field work was carried out from July to November 2002. We used satellite images from 2001 at 1:50.000 scale. Ten 500 m2 plots were selected randomly on different forest of the study area were we conducted vegetation profiles and environmental variables were measured. Those variables were: Visual-horizontal obstruction (VHO), canopy density, environmental temperature, trees, shrubs, seedlings and vines density, litter proportion and depth, grass proportion and amount of fallen flowers and fruits. Physicalchemical parameters of principal water sources of the study area were also measured. The physical design and thematic maps of the study area were also created. To create the Physical design every ranch owner who decides to take part on the project of the creation of this Refuge facilitates us maps of its own properties. Vegetation and Use map was one of the most important thematic maps created and there two LANDSAT satellite images were used for its development: code 005054 (December 2000) and 004054 (March 2001). The information obtained from field work surveys, the thematic maps and bibliography was used to create the prioritary habitat maps for jaguar's protection. On these maps we differentiated zones with optimal habitat for the species and this information was a useful tool to create the management plan of the Refuge to protect this species. Some motivational and informational workshops for cattle ranchers were also carried out. On these workshops field work results, physical design and some other components of the project were presented to community.
