Hunt Jr., R.M.
Biogeography of the order carnivora
1996  Book Chapter

By definition, a carnivore is a flesh-eater (L., carnis, flesh; vorare, to devour). In the wildest sense, the term refers to organisms that prey upon animals, and thus may include vertebrate and invertebrate predators and even insectivorous plants. Insects constitute an enormous source of animal proteon, and the many species of primarily insectivorous mammals that have exploited this resource during the Cenozoic could be termed carnivores.
