Ecological separation in a Venezuelan llanos carnivore community

Five species of sympatric carnivores (1 felid, 3 mustelids, 1 canid) were studied by radio-tracking at a ranch in the central llanos of Venezuela. Diet, habitat use, and activity time of crab-eating forx, ocelot, tayra, grison, and hog-nosed skunk were examined as factors related to ecological separation...Ocelots were solitary and nocturnal, although some daytime activity was not uncommon. Movements of ocelots were variable, and adult females travelled about half as far per night as an adult male. Home range sizes of females were about one-third to one-quarter that of an adult male. Ocelots spent the majority of time in forested habitats, obpen types were less frequently used and then only at night. Ocelots fed mainly on small rodents, while reptiles ranked second in frequency of occurrence...
