Gautam Buddha was perhaps the only preceptor of a major spiritual movement in the ancient world who not only did not claim divinity, but forbade worship of a symbol or an image, including his own. It was some two centuries after his death that the first symbol as an object of worship appeared in art forms and some three more centuries thereafter, the image of the Great Preceptor himself.
