Diet analysis of lynx in Croatia and Slovenia
1999  Full Book

Food habits of Euroasian lynx (_Lynx lynx_) have been studied by analyses of stomach contents and scats of lynxes collected from 1983 to 1998 in Croatia and Slovenia. Influence of age, sex, body mass and season on diet choice was investigated on 39 samples. The results revealed that the primary prey of the lynx were Cervids (roe and red deer)(80%), especially in summer (100%). Dormice were important prey of adult female and subadult lynxes in fall and winter, 50% and 27% occurrence, respectively. The correlation of the body mass of predator and prey has been determined: larger (>18 kg, and all adult males) lynxes preyed exclusively (100%) on roe and red deer (P<0.05 compared to subadult and <18 kg lynxes). In the samples of subadults the remains of a total of nine animal species have been found: roe or red deer, cattle, sheep, equids, dormouse, wild boar, cat, marten and birds. No significant differences were found in diet of Croatian and Slovenia lynx.
