Ropes as climbing structures for clouded leopards (_Neofelis nebulosa _Griffith 1821)
1995  Conference Proceeding

The behaviour and enclosure utilization of clouded leopards at Zurich Zoo were recorded with the aim of enriching the captive animals' environment. During initial observations, no occurrence of the acrobatic climbing behaviours described in earlier literature could be observed. Because the climbing structures in the clouded leopard enclosures consisted exclusively of large branches and trees where climbing was not difficult, horizontal tight ropes were installed to simulate thin flexible branches. The clouded leopards showed a variety of different behaviours on the ropes, and their climbing abilities became visible. No habituation to the ropes occurred over years. Tight ropes are suitable enrichment devices for clouded leopards, because they can elicit natural behaviours.
