Sunarto, S.
Ecology of Tigers and Their Prey in Riau, Sumatra
2006  Manuscript

This study will be part of a collaborative effort to investigate Sumatran tiger ecology in the highly dynamic landscape with a very high deforestation rate. Supported by WWF, Indonesian Forestry Department, and Virginia Tech, this study will contribute to a bigger and longer-term initiative to save biological diversity, particularly tiger and prey communities, in the landscape We will link this study to other innitiatives for conservation of Sumatran tigers across the island, as well as other efforts to conserve the biodiversity and the nature in general, particularly in Riau Province. To ensure synergism with other programs, we will maintain communication and promote collaboration with other organizations working for tigers in Sumatra and other areas such as tiger projects in Jambi, Lampung and Kerinci. At the local level, we will make a special effort to integrate our research with the on-going programs to engage private sectors in nature conservation through the assessment and protection of High Conservation Value Forests (HCVF) as well as awareness campaign program conducted by a network of NGOs such as Eyes on the Forest This study was designed to provide information on the ecology of tigers and their prey that may enable stakeholders (particularly local government and private sectors) to implement better practices for the mutual coexistence of tigers and humans in the landscape. Objectives of this study are to: 1. Predict the probability of occurrence of tigers and their prey across the Tesso Nilo- Bukit Tigapuluh Conservation Landscape 2. Estimate density of tigers and their prey from selected areas 3. Assess the implication of some management scenarios and prioritize areas for tiger conservation in the landscape.
