La conservation du guepard en Algerie - Etat des connaissances actuelles
(Conservation of the cheetah in Algeria - Status of knowledge).
8 pp.

The report summarizes the geographic distribution and the relation of man with the cheetah in north Africa. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the species was present in almost all the regions of the Sahara, but today populations are reduced and fragmented. The central and southern mountains of the Sahara seem to be used by this species as a refuge from desert harsh conditions. The cheetah's pursuit for the hunting and skin has lately decreased, because of the low densities and the inaccessibility of their territories.

Status of larger wildlife species - cheetah, leopard and lion.
  Report 7 pp.

The conservation status of cheetah, leopard and lion in Mozambique is described. A distribution map illustrates the regression of the cheetah populations from the 1930s to the 1980s. The situation is due to tremendous poaching in recent years and to the destruction of prime habitat, particularly by wild fires. The occupation of large areas of cheetah's habitat by cattle farmers who kill them as a threat to domestic stock, is also a problem. A few cheetah skins still appear in the illegal trade.

Social organisation and living space.
In The Carnivores, chapter 7: 250-292.

Social organisation, living space and territoriality are discussed for canidae, hyanidae and felidae, with a short description of studies made on cheetah. Depending on the circumstances, cheetah may live as solitary animals, or family ties may be maintained long enough to give rise to groups with considerable stability.

A preliminary survey of the occurrence and distribution of amphibians, reptiles and mammals in the Bushmanland, eastern Kavango and Mahango areas, wigh notes on historical distributions.
  Report, 11 pp.
A preliminary survey of the occurrence and distribution of amphibian, reptiles and mammals was made in two lately neglected areas of Southern Africa. Results are summarised in a short description and in maps. Cheetahs were common and widely distributed in the Bushmanland, Namibia.

Cheetah dilemma.
African Wildlife 32[3], 22.
Even in historical times, cheetah have never been abundant in South Africa. Former studies estimated that there were probably 700 left - 100 in Natal protected areas; 250 in the Kruger Park; 150 in the Kalahari Gemsbok Park, and perhaps 200 elsewhere. However, the threat to the cheetah comes not from its decline in protected areas, nor its inability to breed in captivity. It is in danger because it is incompatible with human activities, it is not sufficiently protected, and trade in skins is not yet at an end.

Diverse genes sought to save cheetahs.
International Herald Tribune . 19 September 1985

Studies of cheetah's genetic variation and immune response lead to the conclusion that the species could be soon vulnerable to extinction. Careful breeding would have to take place with unrelated cheetahs in captivity in order to save the species.

Gene-blues for the cheetah.
New Scientist, 16 May 1985, 21.

Lack of genetic variation threatens the survival of the cheetah. Research produced evidence of poor reproductive success and vulnerability to diseases.

Two new Onza skulls found.
ISC Newsletter 4(4): 6-7.
The Onza, a puma-like felid of Northwest Mexico, has received renewed attention. It was noted as distinct from the puma in Spanish colonial and missionary chronicles, as well as in reports by modern-day Mexicans. Acinonyx trumani was originally thought to be a puma, but was reinterpreted in the 1970s as an archaic cheetah.

Zoo diet to blame for cheetahs' sterility.
New Scientist 116 [1580, 1 October 1987], 31. 1987.
A connection between cheetah's diet, mortality and fertility was found by some researchers.  Mortality was bigger in animals fed with soyabean complements, that appeared to damage the liver and the uterus.

 Anonymous. 1987. ... but the cheetah's future is rosier. New Scientist, 9.4.1987. 1 p.

The discovery that East African cheetahs are genetically more diverse than the South African form, indicate that the cheetahs suffered a population crash about 10'000 years ago and offers hope that careful programes might improve the gene pool in the South African subspecies.
