Portuguese Action Plan for the Conservation of the Iberian Lynx is up for public discussion

On November the 5th, the Portuguese Secretary of State for the Environment, Mr. Humberto Rosa, presented the national Action Plan for the Conservation of the Iberian Lynx. This long awaited and crucial document outlines measures to overturn the current Iberian lynx conservation status in this country, where it has reached pre-extinction status.

The action plan is developed around the following objectives: 1) To preserve favourable habitat for the species and the wild rabbit, its main prey species, maintaining and recovering habitat destined for future translocation / reintroduction projects; 2) To minimize non-natural causes of mortality; 3) To implement a captive breeding centre within the Iberian network of the captive breeding programme; 4) To raise social awareness about the plight of the Iberian lynx; and 5) To establish a continuous monitoring and surveillance system for the Portuguese Iberian lynx populations.

The action plan is up for public discussion between November 5th and December 5th prior to its approval, and is available from the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity (ICNB) website - LINK.
