My main research focus has been to establish reliable morphological characters that correlate with genetic characters to distinguish wildcats from domestic cats and their hybrids in Scotland in order to support enforcement of protective legislation for the wildcat. I am chair of the Scottish Wildcat Conservation Action Plan Steering Group. My other main research focus is investigating geographical variation, including biogeographical modelling, of widespread cat species of high conservation importance including tigers, lions, clouded leopards and wildcats. I lead the Cat Classification Task Force, which produced a revised taxonomy for the Felidae in 2017.
