Conservation Strategies

A meaningful cat conservation unit often stretches over several countries, encompassing different cultures, languages and legal systems. Thus, to have an overall strategy in which the threats to the species are identified, actions to combat these threats and results to be achieved are defined. Conservation efforts are coordinated and this helps to set priorities for the conservation of the species. Conservation Strategies provide guidance for the conservation of a species or subspecies across its entire range or across a certain region. For Conservation Strategies to be effective, it is essential that they are developed in a participatory way with all relevant stakeholders. Strategies should be based on reviews of the status of the species and its Red List and Green Status Assessments and should be translated into (National) Action Plans.

The IUCN SSC Guidelines for Species Conservation Planning and the Cat Conservation Compendium provide guidance on how to develop a conservation strategy for a species.

Conservation strategies that follow the guidelines of the IUCN and where the Cat Specialist Group has been involved can be searched below either by species or by region.
