I am Emeritus Scientist in the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute; and Affiliate Professor, Environmental Science and Policy Department, George Mason University. As a conservation scientist, my research efforts have focused on understanding and encouraging landscape patterns and conditions where large mammals can persist, training future conservation leaders, and diffusing environmental understanding through my writing. I served as head of the SCBI/Conservation Ecology Center (2006-2014) and curator at the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park for two decades (1982-2003). I have been a member of the IUCN Cat Specialist Group since 1974. I am a co-founder and contributor to the Global Tiger Initiative, a global effort to stabilize and recover wild tiger populations.
