Wildlife utilization in Botswana: a review and evaluation of hunter returns as a source of administrative and biological data
1974  Journal of the southern african wildlife management association (4): 167-176

This paper considers the use of hunter returns as a source of administrative and biological data as practised by the Botswana Department of Wildlife and National Parks. Wildlife utilization in Botswana is based upon the trophy industry, wildlife viewing, and tourist and subsistence hunting. Tourism is still in its infancy and the majority of the estimated R6.6 million annual income from wildlife is derived from hunting and its affiliated industries. The direct revenue from traditional hunting is negligible but this type of hunting accounts for 90 percent of all game animals shot each year. Hunter returns were used to calculate hunter success for species and areas, individual values of each animal shot and species contribution of the overall hunting revenue. Safari clients contribute a proportionately larger share to the revenue derived from hunting than non-safari hunters. Hunter returns were analysed for biological information on population trends, movement patterns, behavioural aspects and distribution. Hunter returns are considered an essential tool in the scientific management of the wildlife resource in Botswana, although there are a number of limitations which are discussed.
