Everatt, K.
Lion population and habitat ecology in the Limpopo National Park, Mozambique
2014  Full Book

The aim of the presented project was to quantify the population and habitat ecology of lions in the Limpopo National Park, Mozambique. The project compared a direct density estimate using call-ups with an estimate derived from trophic scaling. The density estimate from trophic scaling was more than three times greater than the direct density estimate from the call-up survey. Altogether these results describe a population of lions held below resource-based carrying capacity by anthropogenic factors. A negative association with settlements along the Limpopo River is indicative of edge effects. Increasing human density along the river may decrease landscape permeability for lions between KNP-LNP and other areas of the GLLCU thus compromising the viability of a meta-population.
