Perspective of the reintroduction of leopards in the North-West Caucasus and Abundance of Ungulates
2006  Conference Proceeding

The population numbers of Alpine and forest ungulates are low. The populations' size are much lower than those documented in the second part of the XXth century, and much lower than the capacity of the region. Extensive hunting and massive poaching became the crucial factors of the decline of the ungulate populations in Caucasus in the end of the XXth century. Combination of the scientific research and practical measures aimed at the recovery of the ungulate populations in the region should be considered the key components of the reintroduction project for Caucasian leopards.
