Conclusion: Arbousset and Daumas visited the Malutis during the end of March at a time when antilope would not have moved out for the winter to the lower and warmer parts of Natal, if such migration was their habit. These writers, therefore, must have obtained their information that these animals multiplied here without ever emigrating, from the local inhabitants. This was also the case with Mr. F. A. Steytler, who informed the present writer, shortly before his death, that he received the information that the Orange Free State game in winter trekked down the mountains to Natal, from the natives. Apparently the latter statement was not intended to include all species, such as springbok, blesbok, etc. Besides the animals which still occur in this particular area, viz. rhebuck, steenbok, baboon, and others, it is highly probable that also in the light of the information presented, there occurred: eland, red hartebeest, blesbok, springbok, reedbuck, black and blue wildebeest, klipspringer and oribi; also lion, leopard, wild cat, hiena, wild dog; further also zebra and probably also hippopotamus.
