Participatory approach for the conservation of biodiversity: theoretical foundations and practical elements in the first five years of implementation of the Feline Conservation Plan of the Colombian Caribbean (Enfoque participativo para la conservaci¢n de la biodiversidad: fundamentos te¢ricos y elementos pr cticos en el primer quinquenio de implementaci¢n del Plan de Conservaci¢n de Felinos del Caribe colombiano)
2013  Book Chapter

This article looks through the theoretical and practical dimensions of community participation in the frame of the PCFC. From the epistemological dimension, participation in this type of projects is a requisite to insert environmental actions within the concept of sustainable human development. From a practical dimension, the participation of local communities in the projects implemented in their territory is an important objective of the PCFC that has been possible due to the use of three main strategies: the integration of local communities in the monitoring activities, participatory planning, and the publication of educational material. The analysis of these strategies show a present scenario in which the social changes that are required in the long term are not yet possible, but it is clearly part of the correct path leading to the incorporation of the communityïs feelings and aspirations in the feline conservation projects, which is an important condition needed to guarantee the subsistence of felines in the Caribbean region of Colombia.
