General framework of environmental education and practical applications of felines in the Colombian Caribbean (Marco general de la educaci¢n ambiental y aplicaciones pr cticas de los felinos en el Caribe colombiano)
2013  Book Chapter

Environmental education is a fundamental strategy to achieve the change in paradigm promoted by the theories of development framed within a sustainable and humanistic approach. Both nationally and internationally, environmental education has been promoted as a suitable way to incorporate aspects of sustainability and the environment in the customs and behavior of society; at the national level, it is worth emphasizing environmental education achievements on behalf of the environmental and educational authorities. In this way, the institutions that have been executing the Conservation Plan for Felids in the Colombian Caribbean -PCFCencourage environmental education as an integral part of their performances. Throughout the first five years of the PCFC three basic tools of environmental education have been implemented: the Notebooks for Community Work, the publication of informative material for the general public and the celebration of the annual Natural and Cultural Festival of the Malib£ Tiger. These tools have significantly contributed to a change in attitude and an increased sensitivity towards nature amongst the communities where the PCFC projects are implemented, as well as to learn lessons that can direct the environmental education activities of the plan for the next five years.
