Management plan for _Panthera onca_ Paraguay 2017-2027 | |
2016 Full Book | |
This management plan for the _Panthera onca_ is guidance for the conservation of the jaguar in Paraguay by the collection of data on the biology and the conservation status of the species at a national level and an action plan for directing the efforts to assure a viable and healthy jaguar population in Paraguay. We hope that it will be useful for wildlife technicians, biologists, veterinaries, communicators, decision takers, educators and for the local people living in jaguar habitat, professionals and non-professionals of all areas that like to collaborate in the conservation of this species in nature. This management plan is the result of collaborative efforts of the Secretariat of the Environment, WCS-Paraguay and Itaipu Binacional, with the participation of Universities, NGOs directed to conservation, the productive sector, government institutions and the public in general. It has a key role, it is in danger of extinction at a national level, threatened by habitat loss and loss of connectivity, hunting of it and its prey species, the lack of effective implementation of public policies aimed at its conservation, insufficient research for its management, lack of environmental education and climate change. It is based on the compilation of science and experience existing on the jaguar in our country and the collaborative union of different institutions for the delineation of the Action Plan for the conservation of the species through participatory workshops. This document contains the biological data and the natural history of the species, cultural values, the background of research and conservation projects, the national distribution, the conservation status and the legal status. 5 lines of action were identified: Ecoregional research and vision, public policies, In Situ Conservation, Ex Situ Conservation and, Education, Communication, Awareness and Tourism. It also defines the monitoring and evaluation of activities by those responsible and presents recommendations for financing these activities. It is hoped that this management plan contributes to the implication of these activities and the conservation of viable and connected jaguar populations' at a national level, in harmony with productive landscape and including all sectors of the Paraguayan society. |
