Convenio entre el gobierno de Costa Rica y Panthera: Unidad de Atenci¢n de Conflictos con Felinos (UACFel) | |
2016 Book Chapter | |
Panthera Costa Rica has been carrying out the application of anti-predation strategies in livestock farms in Costa Rica since 2009, attending a total of 48 cases between 2010 and 2013, primarily developing these activities along the Barbilla- Destierro and San Juan La Selva corridors. As a result of these positive experiences, and the close contact with MINAE (Ministry of the Environment and Energy), and SINAC (National System of Conservation Areas), the Panthera Costa Rica-MINAE Agreement was signed and the Wild Cat Conflict Response Unit (UACFel; Spanish acronym) was fthus created in September 2013. These activities were initially developed around the conservation areas of Costa Rica, and later extended to most of the national territory. Cases attended include not only wild cat predation cases but also those generated by other predators (coyotes, domestic and feral dogs, etc.). Cambiar The aim of this work of the work is to reduce the vulnerability of domestic species, to increase the availability of natural prey for wild cats and to improve the productivity of herds on the farms, as a mean of compensating for losses, increasing the acceptance towards wildcats and improving the collaboration of livestock owners with the UACFel. Between September 2013 and December 2015, the UACFel has dealt with 152 cases of predation, and implemented anti-predation strategies in 59 farms. As of October 2016, a total of 219 cases of predation have been attended. In addition to the previous, and as a positive collateral effect, a "depredation hotspot map" is being generated for the whole country, which will be very useful for the state and central governments, in the taking of decisions regarding corridors, protected areas and productive areas. In this sense, by promoting the reduction of the livestock / wild cat conflict in a practical, direct and effective way, the UACFel has become a pioneer initiative, which is under development, and serves as an example for other countries in Latin America. |
