Conservaci¢n de jaguares en espacios humanizados, estrategias para reducir conflictos
2013  Book Chapter

Conserving jaguars involves complex social and ecological issues that include at least three factors: 1) private land ownership, 2) livestock as predominant land use, 3) lack of sufficiently large protected areas, inadequately managed and homogeneous to sustain the species on the long term. We consider that the inclusion of ranchers in any conservation program is vital, however, ranchers are not always gained to the cause because they lose animals to depredation events, or because they are afraid of the species. We offer a battery of management alternatives that can be used alone or combined to decrease depredation from large cats on domestic animals. Management alternatives have been developed for the last 20 years by the authors in collaboration with ranchers from Paraguay to Mexico.
