Unlike Africa, at present America lacks large herds of migratory herbivores or charismatic megamammifers, such as elephatns or rhinos. This was not always the case. America had an enormous amount of megamammifers such as quines, camelids, mammoth, megaterials, milodonts and glyptodonts, which disappeared after the last glaciation 1.6 million years ago, in the late Pleistocene epoch in the Quaternary period.
