Comportamiento del ganado criollo Sanmartinero y Pantaneiro: la experiencia brasileĀ¤a y colombiana
2016  Book Chapter

Livestock predation is one of the main problems in feline conservation. To decrease the conflict, it is necessary to address cattle management strategies with owners to control predation. Panthera is an NGO which works in pilot farms distributed across tropical America developing different strategies, some still in experimental stage. One such strategy is the use of creole (Criollo) cattle breeds. European conquerors and settlers introduced cattle in America that adapted to tropical conditions in the presence of predators such as jaguars and pumas. These breeds were able to defend themselves from predators, a trait transmitted to the contemporary breeds. We resume information collected from ranchers that recount anti-predation behavior of these breeds in Brazil, Panama, Costa Rica, and Arizona (USA). We describe the results of successful decrease in predation episodes in case-control trials performed in Brazil (Pantaneiro breed) and Colombia (Sanmartinero breed). Decrease in predation episodes by means of creole cattle happened independently of environmental circumstances or / and livestock management, thus showing that it could be a useful practice especially in extensive cattle ranching conditions were other measures are difficult to apply.
