An lise da preda‡Æo de _Puma concolor_ em rebanhos dom‚sticos na regiÆo do Parque Nacional de SÆo Joaquim e entorno, SC, Brasil
2005  Full Book

Livestock depredation by wild predators is the most intense conflict between human and wildlife, due to economic losses. Farmers try to solve this by killing the predator, which is the major cause of death of mountain lions all over the world. Attempting to understand the environmental factors related to this conflict in SÆo Joaquim National Park, SC, Brazil, and surroundings, farms with mountain lions (_Puma concolor_) and farms with livestock depredation by mountain lions were surveyed in 2004. Data related to livestock and farm management were gathered and analyzed along with landscape data (forest cover, elevation, terrain slop, water and road distances), showing that livestock management in the study area may increase livestock depredation by mountain lions. Livestock and farm management improvements, reduction on wildlife hunting and forest fragments protection are actions that can decrease the livestock depredation. Federal and state environmental agencies should play a very important role on the dissemination of the information about predator ecology, helping landowners to improve livestock and farm management. Extension agencies should plan and implant support programs with adequate farm management techniques, taking into consideration environmental conservation.
