Legends of the Arabian leopard in the Hawf Protected Area, southern Yemen
2011  Wildlife Middle East (5): 4-4

The Arabian leopard (_Panthera pardus nimr_) is Yemen's national animal since 2008. Yet the natural history of the species is little known due to the various threats it faces in its range. Local culture and social values combined with a lack of education and understanding of the intrinsic value of biodiversity, threaten the survival of this species in Yemen. Local legends and folklore are interesting in understanding the place the leopard occupies in the society. A clear lack of understanding of the natural history of the animal and its behaviour can be discerned from these stories.
