Ein Beitrag zur Kenntnis sdafrikanischer Leoparden, _Panthera pardus _(Linnaeus, 1758)
1966  S„ugetierkundliche Mitteilungen (14): 317-324

In South Africa live 3 subspecies of Leopards that can well be distinguished. 1) _Panthera pardus melanotica_ Gnther, 1885, in the south of the Oranje River towards the east until Natal and Zululand. 2) _Panthera pardus shortridgei_ Pocock, 1932, in South West Africa from the north until Northern Angola and Southern Congo (Katanga), from the east until the Limpopo and Matabeleland. 3) _Panthera pardus adersi_ Pocock, 1932, from Transvaal along the eastern coast of Africa with an extension to Zambeze and Shire until the western surroundings of Lake Niassa. The subspecies _Panther pardus puella_ from the Kaoko Veld district in Damaraland, described by Pocock 1932, cannor be maintained after the study of rich material. It has to be considered as a synonym of _Panthera pardus shortridgei_ Pocock, 1932. In the area of the southern East African trench, i.e. in the surroundings of the Lakes Tanganyika, Meru, and Bangweulu, we meet the subspecies of _Panthera pardus suahelica_ (Neumann, 1900), the East African Coast Leopard. According to data known up to now, _suahelica_ is supposed to be extended until Transvaal, but it does not occur in the south of Zambeze. From Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) several subspecies are known that overlap with other ones.
