Note on a supposed melanotic variety of the leopard, from South Africa
1885  Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (17): 243-245

The author reports an unusual coat pattern of a leopard in South Africa. He considers possible hybridisation between leopard and lion, and leopard and cheetah, but rejects these options. He concludes that this is the first case of a melanistic leopard in Africa, even though the coat pattern is different from the common melanistic patterns known from Asia.
