Carnivores in Crisis - The Big Cats
2004  Africa Geographic (June 2004): 28-29

Powerful and finely tuned to fulfil their role in the natural scheme, carnivores, one might think, have little to fear from human encroachment into their realm. Not true. They are as vulnerable as any other species, and in some cases more so. The New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has carnivores at the heart of its efforts to save wildlife and wild lands around the world, and its Global Carnivore Program works with scientists in the field to develop and implement the most successful strategies for protecting the most endangered of these species. Luke Hunter, a regular contributor to _Africa Geographic_, is the coordinator of the programme, and in this issue and the next he and WCS researchers across Africa will report on their carnivore projects.
