Management plan for the Hawizeh Marsh Ramsar site of Iraq
2008  Full Book

The Hawizeh Marsh is a symbol of Iraq's rich natural and cultural history, a place in which all Iraqis can take great pride. These marshes lie in the southern, ecologicall rich belt of the nation at the junctin of the Tigris-Euphrates Rivers. The Hawizah Marsh became Iraq's first Ramsar site, when the country entered the Ramsar Convention in early 2008. The management plan for the site includes a section that reviews the state of knowledge on the biological diversity present in the Hawizeh Marsh for plants, amphibians and reptiles, birds, mammals and fish. From a list of 18 "Mammal Species Sighted or Likely Occurring in Hawizeh Marsh 2004-2008" only 2 have been "Observed", 4 have been "Reported" and the rest was "Not seen". However, there is insufficient information to accurately suggest the current status of all these 18 species of mammals in the Hawizeh Marsh. Many of the animals are secretive or nocturnal, and appear only in isolated areas that are logistically difficult and currently dangerous to attempt to survey.
