Malicious carbofuran poisoning of a leopard (_Panthera pardus_) in Sandynallah Reserve Forest, India
2008  Journal of Wildlife Rehabilitation (29): 15-17

The increase in human population and subsequent fragmentation of habitats has resulted in frequent human-wildlife conflicts. Here we report on the case of a leopard _(Panthera pardus) _found to have been intentionally poisoned with carbofuran. a carbamate and systemic insecticide used for agricultural purposes. The poisoning was diagnosed by detection of the chemical by thin layer (hromatography (TLC) in samples of stomach contents. intestinal loop and liver from the leopard carcass. and muscle tissue sample from the cow carcass. The case history and lab analysis confirmed that mortality of the leopard was due to consumption of carbofuran. Instances of other poisonings of wild fauna with carbofuran in other parts of the world are also discussed.
