_Brucella abortus_ and _Brucella canis_ in captive wild felids in Brazil
2013  International Zoo Yearbook (47): 204-207

Brucellosis is a zoonosis. The aim of this study was to check the health status of felids kept at the zoo of the Federal University of Mato Grosso, CuiabĀ , Brazil. Blood samples were taken from seven Puma _Puma concolor_, five Jaguar _Panthera onca_, four Ocelot _Leopardus pardalis _and one Lion _Panthera leo_. Brucellosis serology and polymerase chain reaction were performed. The presence of antibodies and DNA of _Brucella abortus _and _Brucella canis _were not detected in _P. leo_. The amplification of DNA from _B. abortus _and _B. canis _was observed in the four Ocelot. DNA from _B. abortus _was detected in one Jaguar, and DNA from _B. canis _in two Puma and one Jaguar. Serology for _B. abortus _was positive in two Puma and two Jaguar, while _B. canis _was observed in one Ocelot and two Jaguar. Although not considered a source of infection to staff, multidisciplinary studies should be carried out to elucidate the role of domestic animals in the epidemiology of this zoonosis.
