Preliminary survey of vascular plants and vertebrates of Muteh Wildlife Refuge, Isfahan Province

Muteh wildlife refuge, with an area of about 220,000 ha, is situated at 95 km north of Isfahan. In this refuge, 511 species of vascular plants belonging to 284 genera and 59 families live along with 117 species of vertebrate animals belonging to 84 genera and 37 families. Rare plants of the area were classified into two categories of "endangered" and "vulnerable" according to IUCN, 1996 categories. The endangered species include _Astragalus chaetopodus _Bunge. _Astragalus eriostomus _Bornm. _Astragalus indistinctus _Podl. and Maassoumi _Cousinia phyllocephala _Bornm. and Gauba _Cousinia rhaphiocephala _Rech. f. _Cousinia straussii _Hausskn. and C. Winkl. _Ferula kashanica _Rech. f. _Onobrychis psoraleifolia _Boiss. var. _Psoraleifolia _and var. _pleiophylla_ Bornm. The vulnerable species include _Bunium caroides _(Boiss.) Hausskn. ex Bornm. _Dielsiocharis kotschyi_ (Boiss.) O. E. Schultz _Dionysia caespitose _(Duby) Boiss. _Dorema ammoniacum_ D. Don. _Dorema aucheri_ Boiss. _Dracocephalum kotschyi_ Boiss. _Echinophora platyloba_ DC. _Hymenocrater bituminosus_ Fisch. and C. A. Mey. _Pimpinella deverroides_ (Boiss.) Boiss. _Prangos cheilanthifolia_ Boiss. and _Thymus daenensis_ Celak subsp. daenensis. The rare animal species of the region were classified into four categories: "critically endangered", "endangered", "vulnerable", and "conservation-dependent species". The critically endangered species are _Felis silvestris _Schreber _F. caracal_ Schreber _Jaculus blanfordi_ Murray (mammals) _Gypaetus barbatus_ _Falco pelegrinoides_ _F. cherrug _and _F. peregrinus_ (birds). The endangered species include _Vulpes cana_ Blanford _Ochotona_ _rufescens_ Gray (mammals) _Falco naumanni_ _F. columbarius_ _Chlamydotis undulata_ (birds) and _Varanus griseus_ (reptilian). The vulnerable species are _Gazella subgutturosa _Guldensteadt _Canis lupus_ Linnaeus _Meles meles _Linnaeus _Hyaena hyaena _Linnaeus (mammals) and _Aquila chrysaetos _(bird). And, finally, the conservation-dependent species include _Ovis orientalis _Linnaeus _Capra aegagrus _Elxleben _Panthera pardus _Linnaeus (mammals) and _Ammoperdix griseogularis_ (bird). The results from this survey were compared with the findings from the survey of some other protected areas in Iran.
