2019 IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science (226): 1-8 | |
During the realization of The Program for Reintroduction of the Leopard in the Caucasus in Russian Federation the mountain landscapes of the Western Caucasus within the boundaries of the historical habitat of the _Panthera pardus saxicolor _were explored. On the border of the Caucasian State Reserve and the Sochi National Park (Russia), we selected the area (50 km2) covered by mountain forests (95%). The most common tree species are: _Fagus orientalis _(40.9%), _Quercus pubescence, Quercus petraea, Quercus iberica _and _Quercus hartwissiana _(24.6%), _Buxus colhica _(1.4%), _Castanea sativa _(13.6%), _Carpinus betulus _and _Carpinus orientalis _(8.4%), and _Alnus glutinosa _(3.3%). We have revealed the presence of the following potential prey species: 3 individuals of _Sus scrofa_, 35 ones of _Cervus elaphus maral_, 20 - of _Capreolus capreolus_, and 12 - of _Rupicapra rupicapra caucasica_. Also we have noted that there are _Lepus europaeus, Meles meles, Nyctereutes procyonoides_, and _Procyon lotor _on the studied area. Based on the natural land's capacity, the population density of potential prey species has growth potential. The results showed that the territory has a high potential not only for periodic visits, but also as one of the permanent habitats of the leopard. |
