Situaci¢n del jaguar en Bolivia
2016  Book Chapter

The jaguars were originally distributed on the American continent from the south of the United States to the center of Argentina (Seymour, 1989). The presence of jaguars in South America was already mentioned by the first explorers in the XIX century. Specifically in Bolivia, Alcides D'Orbigny (1844) described attacks to horses and other encounters in camps during his trips to Santa Cruz and Beni. The first attempt to assess the situation of the jaguar in Bolivia was made by Tello in 1986 and fifteen years later there was a continental revision effort (which included Bolivia) as part of the collective work published by Medell¡n et al. (2002) on the status of the species. Based on this work by Medell¡n et al. (2002) and as a result of the workshop "The jaguar in the twenty-first century: the continental perspective" carried out in November 2009 in Merida, Mexico, 28 participating experts agreed to carry out an updated evaluation of the jaguar's situation. Specialists from each country met to collect the existing information and prepare a report based on five key points: historical and current distribution, specific studies, priority regions for jaguars and conservation options.
