Statut de conservation du lion (_Panthera leo_) au Burkina Faso
2016  Full Book

The IUCN-SSC organised two regional workshops, one for West and Central Africa (2005) and one for Eastern and Southern Africa (2006), with the intention to gather major stakeholders and to produce regional conservation strategies for the lion. The Burkina Faso authorities in charge of wildlife took part in the regional exercise for establishing the Regional Conservation Strategy for the Lion in West and Central Africa. They recognised the importance of establishing a National Action Plan for the Lion in Burkina Faso and realized the lack of comprehensive information on the species in numerous areas of the country. A survey has been launched to update the conservation status of the lion in Burkina Faso. The final report of this survey is expected to become a comprehensive material for submission as a contribution to a forthcoming National Action Plan workshop. The current report describes the different methods used and the results obtained. A database has been set up to collect and analyse the information available as well as the information generated by specific inquiries with 161 informants. Eighth thematic maps have been drawn. We had been able to obtain information for 72 Protected Areas out of 87 (i.e. 41 800 kmý) and 125 Departments out of 351 (i.e. 102 600 kmý outside Protected Areas), i.e. 53 % of the total surface of the country. The lion range in Burkina faso is approximatively 50ø600 kmý, i.e. 18 % of the terrestrial surface of the country, of which 26 800 kmý, i.e. 10 % of the terrestrial surface of the country (and 53 % of the distribution area), correspond to permanent presence. An assessment of the lion population size has been attempted with a tentative minimum number of 760 individuals in Burkina Faso at this stage, of which 576 in Protected Areas (i.e. 76 %). Half of the lion range with permanent presence lies in Protected Areas (25 % out of 53 %), especially National Parks and Hunting Areas, and half outside Protected Areas (28 % out of 53 %). However, nearly the whole lion range with temporary presence lies outside Protected Areas (41 % out of 47 %). In line with the Regional Conservation Strategy for the Lion (IUCN, 2005), 2 LCUs are suggested for Burkina Faso. Human/lion conflicts occur in the country, although not frequent, except in eastern Burkina Faso around W and Arly National Parks. The main threat to lion is the growing and rapid agricultural and pastoral encroachment on natural habitats for lion and preys.
