Sundarbans Tiger Project Report - August 2005
2005  Full Book

The following document presents the results of a two-month effort to capture and collar tigers in the Sundarbans of Bangladesh. It also outlines the results of a pilot study to explore the effectiveness of pellet counting to index prey abundance. The main objectives were to (1) Capture at least one tiger to be fitted with a Geographical Positioning System (GPS) collar, (2) to train FD personnel in tiger capture, immobilization and monitoring techniques, and (3) to investigate pellet counts as a means to estimate tiger prey abundance. Capturing tigers to be fitted with Geographical Positioning System (GPS) collars will be the start of a long-term study of the tigers and their prey in the Sundarbans. The project will benefit scientific understanding and conservation of tigers in the area. Based on the results of the capture attempts, recommendations have been made for future efforts and training of FD personnel.
