The tiger has always been regarded by humans with awe. Admiration for its beauty has been combined with underlying fear of its massive power. It has been a living presence for millions of people in Asia, from Turkey to the Russian Far East, and from Indie through Southeast Asia to Bali, in the southern tropics of Indonesia. In the forests and grasslands it shared with people it was worshipped; and its crude image exists today in jungle shrines.
