Tiger heroes: a community engagement on tiger conservation in Bangladesh Sundarbans
2013  Full Book

Sundarbands is home of Bengal tiger (_Panthera tigris tigris_) and the place where human-tiger conflict (HTC) are more frequent compared to any other tiger area in the world (Barlow, 2009). In average 20-30 people were killed every year due to HTC in Sundarbands area (Inskip et al., 2013). This HTC also resulted at least 3 tigers were killed per years (Barlow, 2009). Based on this situation, resolving HTC in an appropriate way is important. In Sundarbans area, when a tiger come to the village, many villagers will come and try to surround the tiger. As a result the tiger gets surrounded by people and could not runaway. Outcomes from this situation are always death of the tiger. For this reason, in order to reduce and/or ignore retaliation toward tiger by local community, managing crowds is important. To manage such crowd situations is not an easy way. Only people who understand local situations can manage this crowd in appropriate ways. Based on this background started on 2008 WildTeam in cooperation with Bangladesh Forest Department (BFD) established Village Tiger Response Team (VTRT) which mainly acts as an early warning system during tiger stray situations. VTRT represents a team which consists of villagers who primarily manage stray situations and control the crowds until the rescue team arrives. This VTRT is volunteering based activity to resolve HTC in the villages adjacent to Sundarbans. There are approximately 76 villages which adjacent to the Sundarbans area. Currently there are VTRT established to help resolving HTC in the area. VTRT is such a promising solution on reducing the number of retaliatory killing by communities toward tigers as a result of HTC. Therefore promoting and managing VTRT is important in order to reach long term goals of tiger conservation in Bangladesh. To manage VTRT, understanding the role of VTRT on tiger conservation and demographic characteristics of each member of VTRT is needed. There are three main goals for this Internship: 1. To understand what VTRT is and how VTRT established; 2. To understand VTRT activities and how it can contribute to the tiger and the Sundarbans conservation; 3. To create general guidelines on establishing VTRT in Indonesia.
