Tiger distribution, phenotypic variation and conservation issues | |
1999 Book Chapter | |
In this chapter the evolution of the tiger and its subsequent colonisation of Asia are reviewed. The scientific basis of the eight putative tiger subspecies is examined and the possible causes of variation in today's tigers are reviewed. In a preliminary morphological study, patterns of variation in tigers are analysed against a background of the possible isolating mechanisms that may have influenced subspecies evolution. Finally, a revised approach to the evaluation of tiger subspecies is suggested and the consequences for current conservation strategies are discussed. |
