Combating tiger poaching and illegal wildlife trade in India | |
1999 Book Chapter | |
It is a common mistake to confuse wildlife poachers with wildlife traders. For instance, when a seizure of tiger skins or bones takes place in a city in India, the headlines next day scream 'Poacher arrested'. The press is not alone in making such a mistake - at least in the Indian subcontinent, many enforcement agencies and wildlife conservation organisations follow suit. This may not seem terribly important at first. Unfortunately, the confusion is carried through to development of enforcement strategies and allocation of resources, and this has serious implications. It is necessary to distinguish between the role of the poacher and the trader, and to develop different strategies to combat each. |
