Lewis, J.
Contraceptive guidelines for the tiger EEP
2000  Full Book

Space for tigers in European and Australasian collections is limited and must be managed very carefully. Whilst the breeding of certain tigers remains desirable and in some cases problematic, the reproductive potential of the European population far exceeds the region's carrying capacity. It has therefore become necessary in recent years to control breeding both of generic hybrids and of specific individuals of known subspecies that have become over-represented in the captive population. Techniques to control breeding have therefore become an important part of veterinary care for tigers. All techniques of controlling tiger breeding have advantages and disadvantages, and a brief description of selected options is set out below, with the EEP's recommendations.
