Reconciling the needs of conservation and local communities: Global Environment Facility support for tiger conservation in India
1999  Book Chapter

India is one of the world's 12 megadiversity countries. The country's biodiversity is coming under increasing pressure from a high, and growing, human population, with many communities living in extreme poverty. Competing land uses and conversion and degradation of natural habitats for agriculture and infrastructure, industrial and commercial activities all place increasing pressure on India's forests, grasslands, wetlands and coastal and marine ecosystems. Human activities such as hunting, cattle grazing, cutting of trees for timber and fuelwood, collection of non-timber forest products, and uncontrolled fires, deliberately or accidentally started, put further pressure on natural ecosystems and their native species. The fate of the tiger, a large predator at the head of the food chain, is a good indicator of the conservation status of India's natural habitats and wildlife.
