What to do when you've succeeded: Project Tiger ten years later
1982  Ambio (11): 1972-2002

India's wilderness areas deteriorated rapidly after Independence, and by 1972 the country's tiger population had dropped to a precarious 1827 individuals. With assistance from international organizations, including the IUCN and the World Wildlife Fund, the Indian central and state governments initiated a program to save the tiger. Ten years later, Project Tiger is an unqualified success. Some 6000 villagers were moved to preserve the tigers' habitat, but their lives are much better as a result, and a number of valuable natural ecosystems have been saved.
