This paper reports the first jaguar density estimation in the semi-arid Caatinga biome in Brazil, which was done in the Serra da Capivara National Park. The authors adapted a methodology originally developed for tigers in India and currently used with jaguars, which consist in the use of camera traps to individualize jaguars through their distinct natural pelage mark. Combined with mark/recapture models, it was possible to calculate the jaguar abundance in the sampled area. A two and a half month camera trap sampling resulted in an abundance estimate of 14 ñ 3.6 jaguars. The populational model that estimates the abundance was the Behavioural Model M(b). The rate from females to males was 1:1.45 and the percent of melanic (black) jaguars was 23%. The effective sampled area was 524 kmý, using the HMMDM buffer. The density estimate was 2.67 ñ 1 jaguars/100 kmý, a result that is greater than those found in other Brazilian biomes. Camera trapping proved to be a cost-effective methodology to sample the jaguar population.
