D‚nombrement des lion dans la R‚serve de BiosphŠre de la Pendjari
2009  Full Book

In the frame of the monitoring of lions in the Pendjari Biosphere Reserve since 2001, the fourth census of lions was performed between 20 April and 22 May 2009. The results indicate a lion density of 0.015 lions/km2 and 0.015 hyenas/km2. Previous lion densities were 0.0067 lions/km2 in 2002 and 0.005 lions/km2 in 2004, indicating at an improvement of the lion population status in Pendjari. This increased density also resulted in an increased number of encounters and group composition. This shows the success of the conservation actions taken by CENAGREF for the lion population in Pendjari. Nevertheless, the lack of observation data by tourists and others remains. Meanwhile, monitoring with call-in stations becomes more frequent and potentially becomes unreliable. It would be advisable to temporarily halt call-in for a few years before starting again. Hence the need for regular monitoring by hunting guides, eco-guards and tourist guides.
