The leopard as a problem animal in the Cape Province, as determined by the permit system
1985  Bontebok (4): 9-16

Data from permits issued to kill stock-raiding leopards showed that during the period 1977-1982 a mean of 690 stock animals was reported killed by leopards in the Cape Province annually. On average 28 leopards were killed each year. Analysis of the data according to divisional councils and quarter degree grid squares identifies the main problem areas as the mountains of the southwestern and southeastern Cape and the broken terrain of the lower Orange River. Information is provided on the numbers of losses of small and large stock in each divisional council area, the numbers of permits issued, the hunting methods employed and the sex and age of leopards shot.
