Depredaci¢n de ganado por pumas (_Puma concolor_) en los Andes colombianos
2016  Book Chapter

Carnivores are threatened by shrinking populations and geographic ranges. Predation on Livestock (PL) generates economic losses and fear in the communities motivating the hunting of carnivores. Two studies were carried out in the Colombian Andes to identify factors that predispose the PL by wild carnivores. The first study was carried out in Ibague, Rovira and Cajamarca, municipalities of Tolima, where 13 Livestock Depredation Areas (LDA) were characterized. In the second study 40 municipalities of Boyaca were visited and 21 LDA were characterized in the two municipalities with the highest incidence (Chita y Socota). In both studies, it seems, that the municipalities are corridors connecting the Natural National Parks (Los Nevados - Las Hermosas and Pisba - Cocuy respectively). The predator identified in all depredation characterized events was the puma (Puma concolor). The results suggest that the PL is more heavily influenced by the opportunistic behaviour of predators than by the ecological characteristics of sites. There is a need to develop further studies that assess the status of carnivores and their prey species, delineate corridors and buffer zones, and help improve cattle management practices in order to reduce cattle preying opportunities by carnivores.
