Information about the population of the Amur Tiger | |
1992 Full Book | |
The number of tigers in the Amur-Ussury region depends on the availability of food and on the economic activity of people. Wild boar are of paramount importance because they are the tiger's chief food source. When snow is deep, tigers prefer to follow tracks in the snow created by boar. As the number of boar falls, tigers are forced closer to human tracks leading to conflict with humans where tigers are shot both legally after killing humans or their domestic animals, and by poachers. Nowdays, due to shortages of food for people, the pressure on boars increases and massive logging of cedar and broadleaved forests reduces their habitat. This situation is aggravated by the creation of free zones (where Chinese and Koreans have equal access with Russians) and the influx of visitors from China, Korea and Japan. Due to this situation, tiger hides and bones bring high prices on the black market and this stimulates smuggling. |
