Richness and abundance of carnivorous mammals in two areas with different degrees of intervention in the protected Cerro Blanco Forest (Guayas-Ecuador)
2018 Investigatio (11): 99-12
The main purpose of this work was to estimate the diversity and abundance of the Carnivora order (Mammalia) in Cerro Blanco Protected Forest, in Quebrada Canoa (QC) and the Higuer¢n trail (SH). The methodology used was through fingerprint traps (n = 40), where the attractants were placed (chicken, meat and canned tuna). Nine species of carnivores were recorded, distributed in four families and five genera. At least eight species of carnivorous mammals reported for southwestern Ecuador are present in this locality, so it should be considered as one of the last refuges for these species. This work should be complemented with trap cameras and telemetry, to evaluate the conservation status of these populations and their resilience against anthropogenic pressures such as urbanization, mining and extensive agriculture. |
